Sunset Yoga
Walden
9/9/19

Winthrop DSU hosted a sunset yoga event to help students unwind while watching the sun fall to usher in the new semester.

The event was held on campus green on Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and was open to all who wished to unwind as the sunset fell. Ticket prices were $5 for students, faculty and staff, $7 for locals of the Rock Hill area and free for anyone who purchased a DSU Pass.

Students joined Cherilyn Heinz, certified yoga instructor, on campus green. The grass was nearly completely covered in the yoga mats of the attendees and DSU provided free water to those of attendence. Photographer Kevin Seabrook said, "The people were very focussed while the instructor spoke and it was really cool, honestly I was surprised at how many people were out there. I didn't expect Winthrop students to be interested in yoga as mush as they were." Cherilyn began with soothing words to help the participants calm down and reassured them to breathe to rest their inner cores. As the sunset fell students practiced different breathing exercises and poses. The pool of participators was very diverse spanning from freshman up to even a few seniors.

The goal of this event was to help rest the nerves of students under pressure of the new semester. Yoga is popular form of releasing stress among many people today. That I why DSU decided to host the event because it was a good way to welcome in the new semester. The hobby has become so popular on campus that Winthrop University offers two sets of yoga classes: PESH 105 (yoga) and PESH 110 (power yoga). Sophomore Sariah said, "It was very relaxing and I enjoyed doing yoga outside with that many people. Overall attendance was enough to cover the entirety of Campus Green.

DSU will continue to host events throughout the month including Winthrop Games, an outside lawn sport tournament, and Dear Body, a panel discussion to talk about the damages social media has on body image.

The events are open to anyone on campus and locals of the Rock Hill area. For more information, contact the office center at dsu@winthrop.edu.
