Winthrop University is home to nearly 170student orgs. However most of which play off a particular interest such as; Math, Photography, archery. Because of this, students are often left out die to lack of similar interest. This inspired current Sophomore Madeline Chuvalas to found The Dandelion Project club.
Madeline is a IMC Major at Winthrop University. Her goal was to provide an outlet for students to meet new people without having a particular interest. “Our mission is to provide a place for all students to come together and celebrate kindness, take accountability for our community.”, said Madeline. After finding four ambassadors for her club, she held her first interest meeting on September 10th.
The Dandelion mission statement is, “A Winthrop club rooted in the belief that kind deeds spread, inclusivity creates community, and relationships make the Winthrop experience.” The name refers to the “dandelion effect” which is a metaphor for spreading kindness. The club is open to all and gives students a platform to meet new people without the need of a common interest.
The clubs meeting structure starts with a greeting in which everyone in attendance introduces themselves, starting with the ambassadors. Next, a speaker will talk to the attendees about kindness and give a testimony. Afterwards, the group will have a bonding exercise activity to welcome new members. Activities can range from interesting questions about each members, or games such as “This or That”. Finally, before dismissal the group discusses the kind deed for the next week.
The club will continue to host meetings every other Thursday at 6:15. Students are welcome to join any week. For more information on the club visit their website https://dandelionprojectclub.wixsite.com/dandelion
