Winthrop University gets a new club on camps; The Dandelion Project

The Dandelion Project  Tate Walden 8/30/19 Winthrop University is home to nearly 170student orgs. However most of which play off a particular interest such as; Math, Photography, archery. Because of this, students are often left out die to lack of similar interest. This inspired current Sophomore Madeline Chuvalas to found The Dandelion Project club.  Madeline is a IMC Major at Winthrop University. Her goal was to provide an outlet for students to meet new people without having a particular interest. “ Our mission is to provide a place for all students to come together and celebrate kindness, take accountability for our community.”, said Madeline. After finding four ambassadors for her club, she held her first interest meeting on September 10 th .  The Dandelion mission statement is, “A Winthrop club rooted in the belief that kind deeds spread, inclusivity creates community, and relationships make the Winthrop experience.” The name refers to the “dandeli...

Winthrop Sanitary Issues Tate Walden 9/7/19 Fall 2019, began as usual with a new class of freshman. Class of 2023 is amongst the largest class compared to its previous years with the total of students being around 1100. With the boy to girl ratio being 60 to 40 as opposed to its usual 70 to 30, class of 2023 had high hopes. However, problems in the residence halls of the freshman class became the talk. Margret Nance is one of the two all girls Residence Halls on campus. A student found human waste in one of the shower terminals and reported it to her RA late August. The staff decided to discuss things in a floor meeting to address this situation. However, the incident spread across social media and became a campus wide joke. Sunset Yoga Walden 9/9/19 Winthrop DSU hosted a sunset yoga event to help students unwind while watching the sun fall to usher in the new semester. The event was held on campus green on Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and was open to all who wished to unwind as the sunset fell. Ticket prices were $5 for students, faculty and staff, $7 for locals of the Rock Hill area and free for anyone who purchased a DSU Pass. Students joined Cherilyn Heinz, certified yoga instructor, on campus green. The grass was nearly completely covered in the yoga mats of the attendees and DSU provided free water to those of attendence. Photographer Kevin Seabrook said, "The people were very focussed while the instructor spoke and it was really cool, honestly I was surprised at how many people were out there. A house and its contents were lost in a fire whilst the owners Christina Shattuck, 43, and Dennis Shattuck, 45, were away on shopping trip with their three children.  An armed student made way on school grounds on Friday and parents demand to know why they were uniformed. Gregg Hubbard, Superintendent of Schools, addressed the incident in a meeting held Tuesday night.
